Ocean has proven to be a wonderful addition to the Curbstone Valley herd. This beautiful doe is as successful in the show ring, as she is productive in the barn, and she has one of the sweetest, and most unassuming temperaments in the herd. Ocean has been very generous with daughters, most of whom have been retained to the herd.

Ocean’s dam, Algedi Farm DJ Splash O’ Honey, is a finished champion doe, earned a VVEE 90 score on linear appraisal at 5 years old, and although now enjoying her retirement, was renowned in the Algedi herd for her excellent udder texture. Splash clearly passed this trait on to Ocean, and Ocean has in turn gifted this same texture on to her daughters, all of whom are a joy to hand milk.

Before arriving on the farm, Ocean had freshened twice, but had not been consistently milked, and was almost dry when she entered the herd. She was bred to Darby her first season here, and produced four beautiful doelings. Her third freshening udder was everything we expected it should be. Capacious, with strong attachments, all around, with excellent rear udder height and width, a butter-soft pliable udder texture, long plumb teats, and a very strong medial.

Ocean attained her junior Championship legs in three registries (ADGA, AGS, and NDGA). At her first show as a third freshener Ocean earned a senior Grand Champion leg, and Best of Breed. At the next show she went on to easily finish her permanent Championship with another Grand Champion leg, and Best of Breed after holding her own against the champion challenger, and Best Udder. In addition, her 9 week old daughter, Curbstone Valley Calypso, earned her Junior leg at that same show!

In 2015 Ocean produced a thousand pounds of milk on 305-day DHIR milk test, and earned the ANDDA Sue Rucker Silver Juju award for production. In 2016, she did it again, and found herself on the AGS Top Ten list that year for protein production. As a six year-old, her fifth lactation in 2017 officially ended at 305 days in milk with 1,080 lbs, and she earned a permanent Linear Appraisal score of EEEE 91. 

At eight years old, after her sixth freshening, Ocean was looking better than ever. Her appraiser agreed, and her Linear Appraisal score increased to EEEE 92. Although Ocean hadn’t stepped foot in a show ring in in four years, two days after that appraisal, she was shown at the Redwood Empire Dairy Goat Association Memorial Doe Show in Petaluma in the champion challenge class, earning two best of breeds, and Best Senior Doe in Show, at the most competitive show in Northern California. The following weekend, she earned another Best of Breed in Champion Challenge at the Gold Country Dairy Goat Association show. 

Ocean is a very special doe to us, and over the years six of her daughters have been retained to the herd, and a couple of sons. From this point forward we feel that Ocean has more than proven the quality and longevity of her genetics, and she will now enjoy a comfortable retirement here with us on the farm, lazing in the shaded pastures here being spoiled and doted on.
