Occasionally we elect to retain littermate sisters. Ivy, and her sister Fernalds Iris, were so very similar in overall structure and capacity at birth, that we chose to retain them both on the farm to watch them mature. The reality is, that if one wants to prove out one’s does, the most reliable method of doing so is to retain them, and prove them out yourself. We feel that both does are deserving of that opportunity, so for now at least, both will remain in our barn.

While we feel that Iris has a slight structural edge over her sister, Ivy was a little more level-headed in the show ring, and handily beat her sister the first time we took her to a show. Following in her big sister, Rosie’s, hoof-steps, Ivy earned her restricted leg over the intermediate, and senior kids, and the dry yearling, at a mere 10 weeks of age. Ivy can now put up her hooves up in the barn until she freshens.

Like her sister, Iris, Ivy shows the predictable length of body and angularity we expect from this cross. As her dam is one of our favorite and most productive does on the farm, watching both her and her sister mature will be interesting, and we look forward to proving them both!
