Meet Black Kaweah, aka Raven. Named for the mountain of the Kaweah peaks ridge of California’s Sierra Nevada, in Sequoia National Park. The word Kaweah is thought to mean “Raven’s Cry” in the ancient Yokuts language.
This doe has a way of catching the eye, even in a crowd. As such, it was difficult to ignore her, and although we didn’t intend to retain a Whitney daughter this season, we couldn’t let her leave.
Front end assemblies in the breed, as a whole, can be quite weak, and this is an area we have sought to improve in our own herd. Kaweah’s dam, Whitney, has some of the best shoulders, and front legs in the herd, and we’re thrilled to see how strong Kaweah is in this area.
During linear appraisal this year, both Kaweah’s dam, and sire, scored E for shoulders, and E for front (and rear) legs, and the result shows in Kaweah, even at this young age.
As a first freshener, Kaweah’s dam, Whitney, could use a little improvement in medial strength, and teat placement, and we’re confident Starman should help improve both. As such, we’re very excited to see this lovely doe freshen in 2021.
