Elerrina was our miracle kid of the 2020 season.  At day 133 of her pregnancy, Errin’s dam, Whitney, suddenly went into labor. Although we weren’t expecting viable kids, we quickly put Whitney into a kidding stall, and pulled out a cot to spend the night with her in case there were any complications. As abortions are not an issue here, we questioned what must have happened to trigger such an early labor.  Around 4AM Whitney began to push, but made no progress. A quick check revealed an upside-down (long since) deceased kid, with its feet digging into Whitney’s spine, and well and truly stuck. Thankfully, we were able to quickly and carefully get that kid repositioned and pulled. It was very obvious that a severe umbilical torsion had caused the demise of that doeling, and was the likely cause of Whitney’s early labor.

Soon after, Whitney because to push again, and we expected another deceased kid, but instead she produced a 3.5lb doeling, that was alive! Weak, but alive. Arriving 11 days early we expected she may have some complications, and weren’t sure that she had great odds of survival. However, we helped her to nurse, providing her with around the clock care to ensure she consumed ample colostrum, and she quickly found her strength, and started to get her feet underneath her. Respiration was labored for the first few days as her lungs were dysmature, and she was monitored closely, but each day she made incremental improvements, and her strength grew by leaps and bounds. Today, you would never know she was born premature. She’s fiesty, and sassy, and full of life.

Errin freshened for the first time in the spring of 2022, producing 2 bucklings sired by Ringo (Luv Me Dew). Her udder structure is a significant improvement over that of her dam, while retaining her dam’s capacity.
