Laurel was one of quadruplet does born to Castle Rock Worth Every Penny in 2018. Her dam  has a beautiful and well-attached udder, typical of a Cleveland Sage daughter, high, wide, and with near perfect plumb teat placement.

With this cross specifically we were looking to improve rump structure, striving for more width and levelness between the thurls compared to her dam, without sacrificing body capacity, or production, both of which Laurel’s dam excels at.

Watching her grow as a yearling, Laurel has so many of the qualities of her dam, in regards to depth, and body capacity, width between the hock, and overall her general appearance is very similar. While we would still like to see those thurls a little higher, there is no doubt that her rump is wider, thanks to her sire. She attended one show in 2019, and placed second in the dry yearling class (behind our doe River Blythe), in a modest class of 24.

After canceling breeding season in 2020 due to the fire, Laurel was milked through and then rebred for Spring 2022 kids. In the winter of 2021, Laurel was already confirmed pregnant with quads when some contaminated hay was brought in with a large semi-load, and some of our pregnant does contracted the neurologic form of Listeria. Laurel was one of the worst affected of the pregnant does, and struggled to eat for almost two weeks. With very aggressive treatment, she slowly turned around, with incremental improvements over the next few months, and maintained her pregnancy, eventually producing two does and a buck sired by Space Oddity.
