We brought Alethia DOH The Big Bang, aka Leonard, into the herd late last season, but changed up the breeding schedule a little to give him an opportunity to prove himself. We felt at the time that our doe, Melia, would be a beautifully complimentary pairing, and we are not at all disappointed in the results!
Lightly linebred on Jupiter and Tupelo, this young doe is sporting some of the best show genetics on the west coast.
Her dam’s dam, Ocean Flower, is one of the best foundation does in this herd, and has aged beautifully, appraising EEEE 92 at eight years of age, and taking Best in Show at our most competitive Northern California show the same season. Her dam, Melia, is a beautifully correct, and dairy doe. Her sire’s dam, Capella, again has shown how well these genetics age, and it was a joy to see her personally in the ring in 2019, as an 11 year-old, winning Best of Breed in Champion Challenge, in both rings.
Even before Kuromitzu (Candy) materialized, we knew if we were fortunate to get a doe from this cross, that she would be retained, no question. Her dam seems to always throw a very consistent type, but needed some improvement in mammary structure. That is where Candy’s sire, Leonard comes in, as his dam, Capella, has that strength in mammary genetics we were seeking.
Candy freshened in the spring of 2022 for the first time, with a single buck sired by Ziggy (Destiny’s Starman). Although capacity was lacking due to a single, the structure is most definitely there, and we’re looking forward to her next freshening.
