Tuppence’s dam, Gold Laurel, was the widest of the quadruplet does born to Castle Rock Worth Every Penny in 2018. Penny has a beautiful and well-attached udder, typical of a Cleveland Sage daughter, high, wide, and with near perfect plumb teat placement. However, Penny struggled during kidding due to her rump conformation, and an internal pelvic architecture issue, and was retired from breeding that year. We specifically selected Laurel’s sire to improve rear width.
Laurel’s first freshening yielded a 5lb single buck, and she easily demonstrated that kidding even a large single buck as first freshener was no trouble at all for her, so we were thrilled at that improvement.
After skipping a year of breeding due to the fire, Laurel finally kidded again in 2022, and this time produced triplets, including two lovely does.
Tuppence’s sire, Space Oddity, has produced some lovely daughters so far, and was the last son produced by our buck CH Curbstone Valley Desert Indigo. Oddie throws a lot of the length of body that Indy was known for, but via his dam, GCH Alethia DJ Written N The Stars, he produces daughters with ample width, as well.
Tuppence is already showing lots of capacity as a young dry doe, and we expect her mammary system will at least meet, if not surpass that of her dam, based on Oddie’s other freshened daughters so far. For now, though, she will be a dry yearling, and freshen in 2024, so we’ll have to wait and see.
