There was no intention of keeping a pair of sisters from this cross, but sometimes it is interesting to retain littermates, and see how they develop and freshen. While not quite having the length of body as her sister, Magpie is wide, and we love a wide doe. As these were Ringo’s (Luv Me Dew) first kids, we are especially interested to see them mature, and if you really want to know how a doe turns out, you have to retain, and freshen her. So, for now, Maggie stays.
Her dam, Kestrel, while a smaller doe, has excellent width and capacity for a first freshening doe, and as her first lactation progressed, we were more and more impressed with her for being on the small side.
It is quite likely that both Magpie and Peregrine will mature with more stature than their dam. Their sire’s dam, Dew Ya Love Me, while not over-height, is a taller doe, with lots of width and capacity, and an incredible mammary system for an almost 11 year-old. A beautiful doe with proven longevity. What more could one ask for, other than grand-daughters that will hopefully in her hoof-steps?
