Sometimes those tiny kids are worth hanging on to! Olive was one of triplet does born to Jazztronica in the spring of 2020, and she was teeny. A mere 1.6 lbs at birth. We had retained her sister, Paris, but held on to Olive for a while, wholly expecting to sell her on as a family pet, as it was not guaranteed that she would catch up to her sisters in size.

Well, she did catch up. Her dam is one of the smallest mature does in the herd, so we were not expecting moose proportions, but as she approached a year of age we suddenly realized she was almost as big as her other yearling cohorts.

Like her dam, Olive’s teat placement looked intriguingly near perfect as a dry yearling, and as the only way to see how a doe turns out is to freshen her, we did, and she did not disappoint!

Unlike her sister, Paris, who unfortunately only had a single doe kid as a first freshener, Olive swiftly kidded with triplets the first year. This helped to really show us just how mighty this petite doe really is. She has a beautiful structurally correct udder, and milks very well for her small size, and is on track to out-milk her dam as a first freshener.

Unfortuately, as a second freshener, Olive only had a single doe sired by Asterion, which limited her udder capacity for appraisal in the spring.
