Curbstone Valley C Dewbonnet

Having just moved to Virginia in the fall of 2021, there was a lot of back and forth to California while we wrapped up some loose ends. Mr. Curbstone was on a trip back to California, leaving me to hold down the fort. During morning chores one day while he was gone, Meme (Alethia MH Dew Ya Love Me), was in heat, and being especially loud and vocal. I kept telling her ‘nope, you’re retired, not gonna happen’. However, Meme protested that decision, quite loudly, all day, and into evening chores. As we had just moved, she was an older doe, and I figured she wouldn’t settle on the first try anyway. So, to regain my sanity I put her out with Capriccio. If nothing else, I would get some peace and quiet while I wrapped up chores in the barn. Meme was happy, Capriccio was quite pleased with himself, and my ears for the first time that day finally stopped ringing! Well, guess who didn’t come back into heat?

Sure enough, 45 days later she was confirmed bred with twins. I started to question what I had done, and if it was a smart choice as Meme was getting older, and would freshen at 10 years old (the ladies here usually retire around 8 years).

It turns out that I was wrong, and Meme was right. Meme knew what she was doing. Her pregnancy was not only uneventful, but having only had two does in her entire life previously, she effortlessly produced twin doelings sired by Capriccio, Dewbonnet (aka ‘Dewdle’), and Voodew. Not only did that help to bring up her lifetime doe score up to four, but it also meant that when we were finally appraised in late October that year, that she could finally be rescored for her permanent score (which of course she knocked out of the park with EEEE 92 at 10 years and 7 months of age).

Never one to look a gift goat in the mouth, there was no choosing which doe to retain. They are both retained to the herd, and Meme is finally officially retired, and putting up her hooves in the barn, as well she deserves.

Meme’s older daughters Whatsluvgottodewwithit, and Bonny Dewn, are both lovely does with beautiful mammary systems, and we expect Dewdle and Voodew to be the same when they freshen. They add in Ocean’s genetics through Calypso’s son, Capriccio, along with Wood Bridge Farm Peridot via Capriccio’s sire, Hanukkah. Needless to say we will be watching with great anticipation as Dewdle freshens in 2024.
