Curbstone Valley A Fire Morel

Morel was the first kid born to the farm after the move to Virginia. For the first time ever, we skipped an entire breeding/kidding season for 2021 while we initially were recovering from the CZU fire. During the post-fire clean-up, after the first winter rains, we found numerous morel mushrooms popping up all over the farm in Santa Cruz. These were quite unique, and known as ‘fire morels’, as they typically only grow after a wildland fire. 

Although Morel’s dam, Chanterelle, is named for a glacier, it seemed logical to branch into a fungi theme for her offspring, and considering the circumstances that lead us to Virginia, the name Fire Morel seemed to be a perfect fit. 

Sentimentally aside, we also freshened a daughter belonging to Chanterelle’s sister, Whitney, who was sired by Asterion, and were so impressed with the improvements in her udder structure, that choosing to retain Morel seemed wise. Morel has more femininity in her general appearance than her dam at this age, and if Asterion stamps her with the caliber of udder we are seeing on his other daughters, she should mature to be a lovely doe once she freshens.
