In Greek mythology, Callirrhoe was an Oceanid, a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, for whom Jupiter’s 17th moon was named.
Callirrhoe almost didn’t survive being born. She was the last of quadruplet doelings born to Ocean that season. After her three sisters were born, in quick succession, during a routine check we found Callie at the far cranioventral end of Ocean’s uterus. Expecting to just help pop her right out, it was puzzling at first as to why it was impossible to move her. Somehow her umbilical cord had wrapped itself around her neck, and down her front leg, and she was firmly anchored in place. It took almost 20 minutes to free her, and once she was finally out she was clearly a little weak from her ordeal. However, she quickly bounced back, and we were so grateful she survived, that she was subsequently quite spoiled and doted on as a kid.
Callie is smoothly blended, with a long lean neck, level topline, and she naturally stands, and walks, with incredible width between her hocks. As a four year-old third freshener, Callirrhoe was appraised with an E in rump.
Her dam, Ocean, is a herd favorite, with an udder that continues to improve with each freshening. As an eight year-old Ocean appraised EEEE 92, and two days later earned a Best Senior Doe in Show at REDGA in Petaluma, amidst some fierce competition from some of the best herds in Northern California.
Callirrhoe is confirmed bred to CH Alethia HB Destiny’s Starman EVE 90 for spring of 2020, and we’re very excited to see the results of this pairing.
