Every once in a while a first freshening doe really stands out on the farm. Zydeco's dam, Calypso, did exactly that this year. Despite a limited show schedule, his dam needs just one more leg to be a finished permanent champion, and already a farm favorite, she was the highest appraising first freshener this year on the farm.

Despite making a number of buck purchases this season, Zydeco continued to stand out in the barn. He carries the length of width of his dam, with his sire's improved front end assembly. Zydeco has a beautiful long neck, wide and level rump, is angular in the hock, with straight front legs.

We don't castrate our bucks until quite late in the season, and this provided us the opportunity to evaluate both Zydeco, and his dam. Calypso has impressed us on all fronts. She has shown incredibly well all season, typically at the head of her large competitive classes of does, she appraised well, and has the highest ME values (rivaling our top producers), and currently has the highest projected milk totals for the season of any of the our first fresheners.

Weighing all of these factors, we've elected to keep Zydeco intact, and see if he throws forward the potential we're currently seeing in him. As such, we plan to use him on a limited number of does this fall to see what this young buck is capable of.
